VASTO Gallery

Barcelona, Spain

,

Designed by Mesura
Photography by Salva López

Domesticity and art intertwine in a former industrial studio in Poblenou

Mesura relies on spatial indefinability to design VASTO's headquarters. A gallery founded by Carmen Riestra and based in Barcelona, which discovers and brings together the creations of emerging artists, while promoting artistic practice and art collecting.

The intervention seeks to minimise spatial divisions while the light and radiant nature of the place is enhanced. Thus, the floor plan is divided into two sections, creating a private and a public area, connected to each other by a service hall. A central wooden volume, detached from walls and ceiling, is introduced to provide unity to the home-gallery.

A large, open-plan complex of 500 m2 sheltered by a roof worthy of admiration: a framework of vaulted beams that reproduces the construction techniques developed by the Catalan architect Joan Torras in the 19th century.

Mesura's proposal embraces the freedom of movement and the fluidity of dynamic environment, prioritising the use of movable elements that accentuate colour and form, and giving attention to the art pieces.

The luminaire Tekiò Horizontal is suspended above one of the few fixed elements in the residence - the large central table. Designed by Anthony Dickens, the lamp dresses its technical structure with Washi paper, handmade in Japan. Tekiò provides the light with texture and allows its intensity and colour temperature to be regulated.

Craftsmanship and technology come together to enlighten VASTO Gallery, a dreamlike space where art has no limits.
